10/30/21 2 people in group I am 5'10" 172# my wife is 5'7" 140# I appologize for the long report I was a little worried about this one because I could not find any recent reports The canyon started off fine But it starting going south at the 3rd to last rappel/downclimb There is a secure chockstone with some webbing and quick link see the above photo It is very narrow in getting to and setting up the anchor at that chockstone but doable My wife rappelled down and I down climbed using the long tail of the webbing a...
Short lives up to its name short Although short in length and time, it is a lovely slot canyon, with some highly photographic sections in the right light If you are in the area doing other adventures, Short Canyon is a great start or end to a day
Neon Canyon May 29, 2025Our 2 person party started at exactly 7:00 am as a reference, I am 62 and my wife is 60 We are intermediate canyoneers and strong hikers We could see the dome far in the eastern distance A well marked trail of cairns took us down a steep decline of slickrock approx 500 ft elevation loss to the sign, soft sand and down desert trails for 90 minutes until we reached the Escalante River I must say that there is not much more of a beautiful sight than the bright green leaves of a grove of cotton...
SGR Canyon, aka S#@! Got Real Canyon, is a very different type of canyon than any other canyon I have done in Moab The canyon is a physical day of elevation gain, route finding, high stemming, and rappels, very unique for Moab Of the people that I know who have done it, comments have ranged from "amazing!" to "meh" I would lean more toward the "amazing!" side of the spectrum Though the actual canyon sections are short, they are unique, beautiful, and well worth the effort to visit Given the length of the day, do th...
Hideout Canyon is not a canyon I recommend to most The canyon is not very technical, and not very narrow, making it not a popular choice with most groups Throw in about a 14 mile day and even fewer groups are interested! That being said, if you like a long day out wandering on Cedar Mesa, this is a nice outing The route finding challenge, lack of people, and remote feel make it a day I enjoyed Be fit and start early, the miles make for a tiring day Rookie Mistake Side Note: Hideout Canyon is one of my most memorabl...
West Canyon likely needs no introduction for the aspiring canyoneer It is often talked about by those who have been there, and several guidebooks rate it as one of the best adventures on the Colorado Plateau, including this write-up If access were easier, West Canyon would be full of people Due to the commitment to reach the canyon, however, you are unlikely to see many others while in the area For the uninitiated, West Canyon is one of the premier canyons on Lake Powell It deserves premier status not because of it...
Granary is a beautiful canyon perched high above Moab The canyon provides breathtaking views of the La Sal Mountains, Arches National Park, and the Behind The Rocks area of Moab This is a beginner friendly canyon that provides ample opportunities to work on your natural anchor skills Retrievable anchor techniques, such as using an OmniSling, are particularly useful to have along in your bag of tricks for this trip Because of the anchor possibilities, it is recommended to have extra webbing and rope Anchors can alwa...
Starting near the Sunglow Campground, this is a hike I would highly recommend The hike, just outside of Capitol Reef, allows dogs and offers similar scenery to the park If you're traveling in the area with a pet and looking to hike or just trying to get off the beaten path, this is a good choice The hike meanders up from the canyon bottom to big views amongst towering Wingate Sandstone walls Once on the mesa top, Boulder Mountain and Bicknell Bottoms offer a striking contrast to the desert sandstone Hikers return t...
Sheepbone and Quarry Canyons form a technical canyoneering loop near Lake Mead The route climbs Sheepbone Canyon, which has a handful of dry falls to surmount, typically with fixed ropes in place Leaving Sheepbone Canyon, the route hikes over a pass and descends Quarry Canyon, which requires rappelling Though right next to each other, the two canyons have different characters Sheepbone Canyon is more narrow, convoluted and lovely, while Quarry is more open Of the two, Sheepbone was by far our favorite With a compet...
Neon, and more specifically the Golden Cathedral, may be one of the most photographed spots in Escalante The last rap into the cathedral is amazing, but the canyon above is equally beautiful Neon Canyon is one not to miss Hikers without technical canyoneering skills can hike up the bottom of Neon to visit the Golden Cathedral and return the same way Though this makes a long hike, I recommend it as the area is stunning and the Cathedral a unique and awe-inspiring place Warning!!! Neon contains keeper potholes! Go wi...
